DiTres FAQ English

Why use a computer for dyslexia?

The general idea behind the computer program DiTres (DiTex, DiLet and DiDoc) is to offer a tool that facilitates the student with reading and writing difficulties to keep up with the learning curve of the rest of the students of the class. Combining the efficiency of the computer with the programs specially developed for dyslexia, we have a very powerful tool for the student.

Why use special a computer program?

The programs of Rehasoft use a supporting voice. Installed on the computer, the voice reads all the texts that the person must read. Listening to the texts while reading on the screen, the person with dyslexia will increase the understanding and will also read much quicker. The student will improve his/hers learning skills through the multi-sensorial learning method.

I always have to work with the computer?

As the computer with the programs from Rehasoft is a very effective combination of tools you will find that the more you work with the computer, the quicker and more effective the school tasks will be performed.

Using the computer means that I will not practice reading, right?

Actually it is the other way around; by using the computer with the supporting voice we apply the multi-sensorial learning. The multi-sensorial learning, reading and listening simultaneously, improves the ability to read because it teaches the brain to correlate the spoken word with the written word.

Does it really work?

There are many tests that indicate that students with reading and writing difficulties improve significantly their capacity of reading and writing by using multisensorial learning, and therefore increase their autonomy and learning skills. In Scandinavia there are more than 2.000 schools that use the programs from Rehasoft for students with dyslexia.

Can all the texts be read by the computer?

DiTex can read any electronic text, for example a Word document, e-mail, Web pages, PDF, etc.

And the printed texts? For example a text book.

DiDoc can scan any printed document, for example a text book or a newspaper. The scanned document appears in the screen like an image, immediately DiDoc will start reading the text of the document automatically.

Is it not heavy to have to scan all books?

Yes, but it only has to be made once. Once the book is scanned, it will be stored on the hard disk and it can be read at any time without having to scan again.

It is not possible to obtain text books in electronic format?

Yes, many editorials provide text books in electronic format, normally in PDF, for students with special educational needs.

I have problems to write. I often misspell the words, and for that reason I write very slowly.

DiLet makes prediction of words. When you begin to write the first letters of word, DiLet gives suggestions of possible words. You can listen to the suggestions/words and they can be pasted into the text. This way you do not need to know how to spell the whole word, just a part of it. By listening to the word it gives you that important audio feed-back to ensure you have the right word.

A person with dyslexia can handle a computer well?

By all means, dyslexia is a reading & writing problem that does not have anything to do with handling a computer. As a matter of fact, many students with dyslexia are more comfortable in the graphical multimedia environment of the computer than with a book.

It is work much to learn to use the computer as a tool for studying?

Well, like all tools that we use, it has its learning curve. The more you know about handling a computer and using different programs, the quicker you can get started. It is also important to keep in mind that dyslexia is something you have to live with for the rest of your life, so learning how to use DiTres is certainly worthwhile.
